Shopify Abandoned Cart Recovery: Emails, Flows and Fixes

Most shoppers who add to cart don't buy on their first visit. A recovery strategy combines removing the reasons people leave with timely reminders that bring them back.

Why carts get abandoned

The usual reasons:

  • Unexpected shipping costs or taxes
  • Forced account creation
  • Missing preferred payment method
  • Long delivery times
  • Just browsing or comparing prices

Set up a recovery flow

Shopify includes abandoned-checkout emails, and tools like Klaviyo let you build a sequence. A common structure: a reminder within a few hours, a second email the next day addressing objections (shipping, returns, reviews), and an optional final reminder. Only add a discount if your margins allow it.

Add retargeting

Meta and Google retargeting ads can show viewed products to shoppers who left. Keep frequency reasonable and exclude recent buyers.

Respect consent

Only send marketing emails and SMS to people who have opted in, and always include a clear unsubscribe option — especially important for customers in the UK, EU and Canada.

Frequently asked questions

Should abandoned cart emails include a discount?

Not always. Many shoppers return with a simple reminder. Test with and without a discount to protect your margins.
